about

Your Academy, the self-declared resurrection of Memphis power pop, follow up their self-titled debut with the cheekily titled #2 Record, a not-so-subtle homage to Memphis legends Big Star’s classic #1 Record. The band’s power pop pedigree is undeniable as Your Academy feature former members of The Scruffs, Dwight Twilley’s band, and crash into june. Self-produced by the band and mixed by Pete Matthews (Alex Chilton; The Afghan Whigs; Golden Smog; Sister Hazel) and Toby Vest (Snowglobe; Tiger High), #2 Record consists of 10 melodic gems touching on themes of love lost and found, conflict and redemption, dreams, The Little Prince, and, of course, Big Star. Sonically, the songs combine elements of 60’s British Invasion rock with 70’s Memphis power pop delivered through a lens of 90’s alt rock radio. While the highlight of the record may well be “Miss Amphetamine,” which LA Weekly described as “gloriously infectious,” the chunky guitars and catchy melody of “Marilu” (Henner, of course) and the wistfulness of “Greta” are worthy challengers. The Big Star theme is most evident in “Our Star,” which describes a fictitious conversation between Alex Chilton and the ghost of Chris Bell circa 1985. The Twilley/McCartney-esque “Just a Little Out of Tune” and “(Not) Forever After All” bring the piano to the forefront and highlight the dulcet tones of singer Brandon McGovern’s velvety voice. Your Academy sound the jangle alert on “My Near Catastrophe” and “Wasting Time” and round out the record with “When We Dream” (“roller skating to a breakfast waiting rocking out to Queen”) and B 612, a tribute to lyricist Johnny Norris’s late mother and her love of the book The Little Prince.
